Family photos: Tips for a light and airy look

Are you overwhelmed with thousands of photos? Maybe you’re scrolling through your camera roll, trying to find that special trip from years ago.
From professional shots to everyday cell phone pictures, are you unsure which ones to frame or how to display them all?
If so, you’re definitely not alone in this!
In fact, many of my clients love having digital files from their Austin session along with their everyday phone photos. However, memories are just floating in the cloud, leaving our homes a bit empty of these printed moments.
And yet, we both know how important it is to print your photos and enjoy them to the fullest.
I still remember the panic I felt when I searched for my daughter’s first birthday pictures on my hard drive. They were missing. Those images were so much more than files to me. They were tangible memories. My heart absolutely sank.
So, why didn’t I make that photo album sooner? Thankfully, months later, I found the photos on my husband’s laptop. It was what I now call a “lucky” ending.
As your Austin TX Photographer, I’ve come up with some easy and versatile ways to showcase your photos, fitting any style you have at home!
3 Easy Ways to Display Photos in Your Home: My Austin TX Photographer Favorites
Matted Prints

Now that we live in a digital world, this is one people don’t often consider prints anymore. Yet, it is SO simple and so timeless!
So what is a matted print exactly? Think of it as a loose print placed inside a thicker board, called a mat. The mat sits in front of the print, creating a visual separation around it. Photos can be printed on a variety of papers, from lustre to semi-matte, or even fine art paper for something more high-end.
Your matted prints are ready to be displayed in the frame of your choice. Alternatively, you can also display them on a little stand/easel, lean them against something on a shelf, or store them in a beautiful keepsake box.
If you love changing things up in your house, these are perfect. Just swap them in and out of frames and voilà!
Photo Albums

Yes, they are beautiful keepsakes. And no, they’re not just for weddings!
Albums are fantastic for newborn photos, vacation snaps, first birthday photos, yearly family photos – you name it! They tell a story, don’t take up much space, and are perfect for those of us who prefer a cleaner look without too many photos on the wall.
My favorite thing about using albums to display family photos is they can double as interactive decor pieces. Sure, they can go in a drawer for safe keeping, but if you display them open or on a coffee table this invites family and guests to flip through and relive those special moments.
And the best part? Kids love looking through them, and it’s a fantastic way for them to connect with family history and stories.
In our house, our albums are stored on a shelf below the TV, in our living room. With a 2.5 year old around, let’s be honest, leaving them with easy access on the coffee table is not exactly the smartest thing to do! Every once in a while, my 8-year-old will ask to sit with us and look through all of her birthday albums (yes, I am that mom that had photos taken for each birthday up until age 5:)). You should see the excitement and wonder in her eyes. Pure magic!
There Are So Many Options. What Album Should I Choose?
As an Austin TX Photographer, I offer my clients two album options: an heirloom album or a matted album. The heirloom album is a high-end, layflat photo album with thick, semi-matte or lustre pages . The matted album is another beautiful option that my clients choose to showcase their favorite portraits from their session. They are handmade with fine ragmat 4ply matboard and, like heirloom albums, offer a variety of customization options. To learn more about my album options, click HERE.
Statement Wall Portrait
Did you know that a large, statement wall portrait can actually make a room look bigger? When you choose one large portrait instead of many smaller ones, it creates a focal point and gives the illusion of more space. Yay!
Pro tip: If you hang it a little lower than usual, around eye level, it makes the room feel cozier and more connected to the photo. If you want to make the room seem taller, hang it higher.
I love going up the stairs in my home and seeing this beautiful, 30×40 framed portrait of our family taken in the bluebonnets. This candid portrait makes my heart so happy. And, the best thing about choosing a print is you can always change the frame as your style or home decor changes!

Bonus From Your Austin TX Photographer: Digital Frames
I like to think of digital frames as digital albums. They’re so versatile and work with any decor or set of photos!
Picture this: it’s Thanksgiving and your digital photo frame is flipping through images from Thanksgiving over the years. What a fun talking piece, right?
Pro tip: This might seem random, but you could even have a digital frame dedicated to showing off your kid’s artwork! If you’ve ever tossed a piece of art your kid made because you didn’t have the space to hang or store it, this is a great way to keep it alive and make your kids feel special, too.
I won’t lie, as a photographer, I lean more toward the traditional way. To me, nothing truly beats a beautiful, high-end piece of artwork. With that said, if you love the idea of a digital frame, I recommend checking out Aura frames. They offer a multitude of options, and are still a beautiful way to get your photos off your Iphone.
Best Place To Print Photos in Austin, TX
As a full-service photographer in Austin, TX, I want all my clients to enjoy their photographs to the fullest.
What does that mean? Well, by now you probably have guessed…Give your photos the place that they truly deserve, not just on your phone, but in the place you call home. That is why I give all my clients the option to not only purchase their digital files but also, and most importantly, heirloom artwork that will last for generations to come. I give them tangible memories that will never be lost on a hard drive or in the cloud.
And the best part? As my client you do not have to do a thing! I help you as much or as little as you want with EVERYTHING. From your design consultation to your reveal and ordering appointment, I take care of it for you, so you can just relax and enjoy your artwork :).
Prefer a DIY option or just looking for some loose prints? My top recommendation: ditch the drug store!! You can find much better quality labs online. My top picks, which are available to the public (not just photographers like the one I personally use), are Mpix and Artifact Uprising.
