Outdoor newborn photos are a wonderful way to capture genuine, authentic family moments. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing 3-week-old Autumn at Katherine Fleischer Park in Austin, TX. This outdoor newborn session was filled with so much natural beauty, light, and love. This was the perfect setting to document Autumn’s early days with family photos to cherish forever.

With the warm morning sunlight, Autumn’s peaceful nature, and her mom’s beautiful wardrobe choice, the session turned out to be a magical experience for everyone.

Another key point to consider for your outdoor newborn photos is the time of day. My favorite time to shoot is during early morning, 1 to 2 hours after sunrise. This time gives us soft, flattering light, which is crucial for creating dreamy images that highlight your family’s connection.

Most importantly, in most cases newborn babies are the sleepiest in the morning, which results in a peaceful experience for both parents and baby.

How to Prepare for Outdoor Newborn Photos

Preparation is key to ensuring your little one is comfortable and cozy throughout the shoot. Here are some tips:

  • Bring Soft Blankets: Having a soft, neutral-toned blanket on hand adds comfort for the baby. It also gives us more flexibility in posing, allowing us to set up anywhere in the park.
  • Dress for Layers: Since outdoor temperatures can vary, bring a few extra wraps to keep the baby warm and snug.
  • Include Sentimental Items: Incorporating family heirlooms, special toys, or a favorite swaddle can add meaning to the photos.

What to Wear for your Newborn Photo Session

If you are wondering what to wear to your newborn session, here are some tips:

  • Choose Neutral or Soft Colors: Light, neutral tones like white, cream, or pastel colors help create a cohesive, natural look.
  • Dress Comfortably: Flowy, comfortable outfits that allow movement are ideal.
  • Complement Each Other: Coordinating without matching completely is a great approach—think in terms of complementary colors or similar tones.

Vanessa and her husband decided to bring along their 14-year-old fur baby, Olivia, who has been a big part of their family for years. Including pets in a family photo session adds authenticity and celebrates their special role in the family. Olivia was gentle and affectionate, staying close to Autumn and creating some truly heartwarming photos. Indeed, pets remind us of the warmth and bond shared within a family, and they deserve to be a part of these precious memories.

However, just keep in mind that most photographers typically require that your fur baby be kept on a leash for the duration of the session.

Autumn was a photographer’s dream! At just three weeks old, she was so peaceful and sleepy, allowing for easy posing. Her serene presence made each shot feel gentle and genuine. We captured many moments with her mom and dad looking lovingly at their newest family member, highlighting the deep connection and joy they share.

Outdoor newborn photos bring a natural, organic feel that’s hard to achieve indoors. Traditional newborn photos often require props and lighting setups. On the other hand, outdoor newborn photography allows nature to provide the perfect backdrop, lighting, and ambiance. The environment encourages spontaneous, heartfelt interactions, producing newborn photos that feel real and timeless.
