Family photos: Tips for light and airy photos

If you’re a parent in Austin, chances are you’ve already come across Austin Fun For Kids. This blog is full of ideas for kid-friendly adventures, hidden gems, and simple ways to make family life a little brighter. Addie Gross started the blog out of her love for exploring the city and sharing those special finds with other families. From playgrounds and local events to seasonal guides and budget-friendly outings, Austin Fun For Kids has become a go-to resource for parents who want to keep their little ones smiling and busy.
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Addie to hear her story. We talked about what inspires the blog, how she discovers new family adventures, and tips for Austin families to make the most of this wonderful resource.
Meet Addie Gross – Family Blog Owner and Mom of 3
Tell us a little about yourself! What inspired you to start Austin Fun For Kids?
My name is Addie and I have a husband and 3 boys. We’ve lived in Austin for almost 12 years. When we first moved here, my older boys were 4 and 2 and I didn’t know anyone here. So I started doing research on all the kid-friendly places around town, mostly from the (now extinct) account Free Fun In Austin.
A year later, the mom who ran that account hired me to work for her, and thus my career in Social Media and blogging began! A few years later (after my third son was born), I began working for a different company and started an account similar to mine for them. That was nice because they paid me to manage their Instagram account and blog, and I began to build this nice little following!
Then one day, the management changed for the worse, and my husband encouraged me to quit and start my own account. The problem with that was that no one was going to pay me to do that! Plus, I had over 2000 followers and would have to start all over at zero which was hard. But I’m glad I did it in the long run!
What do you love most about living and raising a family in Austin?
Austin is just so much fun! I love the quirkiness and the endless possibilities of things to do with kids. We moved here from a small town, which was a nice place to start a family because it felt safe, but it quickly became very boring. Once we got here I never wanted to stop exploring (and still haven’t stopped)! Plus, all the restaurants with playgrounds are amazing!

About Austin Fun For Kids
For families who may be discovering your site for the first time, how would you describe Austin Fun For Kids?
This is your go-to guide for all the fun things to do with kids in Austin. Events, playgrounds, parks, restaurants, day trips, and more!
What kind of resources, guides, or tips can parents expect to find on your blog?
I have so many seasonal guides, parks and playground recs, and more. My favorite post is my Restaurants With Playgrounds post, which was so huge I had to break it up into multiple posts based on location.
How do you come up with the ideas for the outings and activities you feature?
I made a huge list 12 years ago when we first moved here and have been working from and adding to that this whole time. New places are always popping up, so I will just add them to the list! It’s hard to believe there are still places I haven’t been even after all these years. But I’m getting there!
Building Connection With Austin Families
What’s one of your favorite family-friendly spots or activities in Austin that you’ve shared recently?
Pumpkin Nights has been one of our favorite family traditions. We’ve gone every year since the very first one and my kids always look forward to it. It’s hard to find something that appeals to both little kids and teens, and this one does just that!
How do you hope your blog helps parents and caregivers in their day-to-day lives?
I love planning the fun, so I hope that parents can just go to my website and get inspired to go out there and have fun with their kids. I have several Food + Fun Pairings on my website and Instagram, which means you can plan a family outing and go eat at a fun kid-friendly restaurant right by there.
You don’t have to pull up Google maps- it’s like your whole day out is already planned for you! I also have a calendar on my website so it’s easy to find kid-friendly events happening on a particular day. And, every Thursday, I post a Weekend Planner on my Instagram feed and my Facebook page so you can see what’s happening in town that weekend.
Behind the Scenes Of Austin Fun For Kids
What does a typical day look like for you when you’re researching, writing, or exploring for the blog?
I have so many posts from doing this for so long, so a lot of my time now is just spent updating those with this year’s current information. I am constantly thinking up new ideas as well, so I keep those on a list and try to knock out a few of those posts when I have time.
What has been the most rewarding part of running Austin Fun For Kids?
People send me so many sweet messages just saying how much they appreciate what I do, and how I’ve helped make adventuring less overwhelming, or how I’ve inspired them to get out with their kids more. I love hearing that- it makes my day! I also love it when my kids have fun doing something I have to bring them to “for work”. That’s really gratifying.
Do you have any upcoming projects, guides, or features on the horizon that families can look forward to?
My Holidays Guide is always my biggest and most popular post of the year!
Austin is such a vibrant city for families, and Austin Fun For Kids makes it even easier to enjoy everything it has to offer. Whether you’re searching for a new playground, planning a weekend adventure, or just looking for inspiration on how to spend an afternoon with your kids, Addie has done the hard work so you can focus on making memories.
