Recently, I had the pleasure to photograph baby Holly’s 6-month milestone session. Allison and Nick wanted an outdoor location with soft, natural light to capture their sweet girl. When is the best time of day for baby photography in Austin?

As an Austin baby photographer, I find that morning is ideal for a photoshoot with little ones. Holly was happiest right after waking up and eating breakfast, as most babies tend to be. Early morning light also tends to be soft and flattering, which keeps photos dreamy and natural while avoiding harsh sun. And, let’s not forget about the Austin temperatures in the middle of August…Mornings tend to be slightly cooler and more tolerable for young children.

Where should we take our baby’s milestone photos?

Many parents in Austin love outdoor locations for the natural backgrounds and soft light. Allison wanted something simple and timeless, so Katherine Fleischer Park was perfect. How old should my baby be for milestone pictures?

With baby photography, I recommend capturing milestone pictures at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 1 year. The reason is simple – these are the ages when you typically see the most development in your baby. At 3 months, your baby starts smiling more, holding his or her head up, and rolling over. Between 6 and 9 months is typically when your baby will start sitting up unassisted, a perfect time to get some fun photos (often referred to as “sitter sessions”). Finally, from 9 months to 1 year your baby will often start pulling up, crawling, and perhaps even walking. That first year of your baby’s life truly goes by in a flash, and milestone photo sessions will allow you to bottle it all up before it’s gone.

What should my baby wear for a baby photoshoot in Austin?

As a light and airy Austin photographer, you’ll often hear me recommend simple, soft, and neutral color palettes for your outfits. For Holly, Allison chose a sweet blue gingham dress that beautifully highlighted Holly’s bright blue eyes. With the warm weather, the light, linen fabric was also a perfect choice to keep her cool and comfortable. In general, I recommend avoiding bold colors, big logos or heavy patterns so your baby remains the focal point of the photos.

Without hesitation, yes!! Although it’s easy to think this session is all about your baby, think about how your baby will look back at these photos years from now. And trust me – they will want to see you in their photos.
