My Austin Photographer Tips For Candid Family Photos

Tip #1: Forget the stiff poses and cheesy smiles

As a family photographerI always ensure to capture the “picture perfect” smiles with all eyes looking at the camera type of shot that every family wants to walk away with. With that said, I LOVE the more candid family photos that truly reflect the love and connection within your family.

Let’s be real, who loves to spend an entire photo session trying to perfectly pose and force a smile for 15 minutes? Definitely not me! And the reality is most people feel uncomfortable standing still in a stiff pose. Because it simply does not feel “real”.

Tip #2: Do not over prepare for your photos

I know it can be so tempting to ask your husband and kids to practice their smiles before the session. However, the best thing to do is refrain. And, as a mom, I totally understand your good intention. You want to ensure you walk away with beautiful portraits to hang on your wall.

Yet, I challenge you to think about what “beautiful” means to you. Is it your little one awkwardly posing showing me ALL his teeth? Or rather a sweet shot of the whole family hugging each other? In other words, if you are looking for authenticity, forget about the preparation and just show up as you are. No stress needed!

Tip #3: Embrace the real moments of connection

My philosophy is to provide my clients with images that tell a story, but not a “cookie cutter” story…THEIR story, in all its uniqueness. I want you to feel and hear the real laughter in your photos.

Mom and dad candidly playing with the kids, having the biggest tickle fights that lead to the loudest and sweetest giggles…Those are the moments worth capturing. Just imagine, years from now, sitting down and looking back your memories, proudly displaying on the walls of your home.
