Family photos: Tips for a light and airy look

“We need updated family photos … does anyone have a recommendation for a good photographer?”
If you’ve ever asked this question, you’re in the right place!
Taking the time to look for and choose the right photographer does matter. You want someone who can capture your family’s personalities, make the process stress-free, and create photographs you’ll actually be proud to print and display in your home. I’ve got good news for you, mama! Finding the perfect family photographer doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Whether you’re booking your first session ever or looking for a new photographer, I’m breaking down everything you need to know—so you can feel confident in your choice and get the beautiful family photos you deserve.
What should I look for when hiring a family photographer? There are so many to choose from!
If you’ve ever searched the internet for “Austin Family Photographer”, chances are you were met with page after page of options. But which one is the BEST? Well, the answer to this question will defer from one family to the next.
When searching for the perfect photographer for YOU, I recommend considering these key factors:
- Style: Do you prefer light & airy, dark & moody, or true-to-life colors? Look through portfolios to find a style you love, and also make sure the photographer is consistent with their style.
- Experience with Kids: If you have little ones, choose a photographer who knows how to make sessions fun and natural (not stiff and awkward).
- Location Options: Do they shoot outdoors, in-home, or in a studio? Pick what works best for your family.
- Personality: If your photographer can make you feel comfortable, it will show in your photos. Find someone who feels like a good fit! I recommend getting them on the phone, chatting through your vision, and getting a good idea of how they will work with you.

My process when a potential client inquires with me always involves a discovery call. This time allows me to get to know them and really ensure I understand their vision. It’s also an opportunity for them to ask me questions and get to know me as a photographer. Once we agree we’re a perfect fit, my next step is to meet face-to-face (or via zoom) with my client to go over all the details. That includes nailing down the perfect location, their dream shots, tips on how to coordinate family outfits, as well as how to best work with the kids.
What can I expect during a family photography session?
A great family session should feel fun, relaxed, and natural.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Before the Session – I’ll guide you through choosing a location, time, and outfit ideas so you feel well prepared.
- During the Shoot – Expect movement, laughter, and some prompts to get genuine smiles! Don’t worry about making kids “pose” and say “cheese” for every single shot. Posed family photos are absolutely beautiful, but your family’s story is best told through the candid moments.
- After the Session – I’ll edit your images and schedule your reveal appointment within 2 to 3 weeks. During that time, you’ll see your full gallery and I’ll help you choose your favorite images. We’ll also look at any prints and artwork to fully enjoy your photos in your home.
Just recently I shot an in-home newborn session that included a little 3-year old. That little nugget sure had all the energy in the world! Her mom and dad knew through our prior conversations that the key for a successful photo session with a young child was simple: flexibility. There is nothing worse than forcing a kiddo into a pose to end up in tears for the next 15 minutes. We simply took our time and proceeded with other shots, whether it be baby alone, or mom and baby, while dad entertained big sister until she was ready to jump back into the pictures.
What should we wear for our family session?
One of the most common questions families ask me during their consultation is “what should we wear??”.
Here are my top tips:
- Start with Mom’s outfit. Pick something you feel confident in, and build everyone else’s outfits around it. If going with a dress, look for something that ties at the waist as it tends to be more flattering in photos.
- Choose a color palette, and focus on coordination as opposed to going all “matchy-matchy”. I recommend choosing no more than 3-4 coordinating colors.
- Avoid logos, big prints and patterns, or neon colors. These can be distracting and take attention away from your faces.

How do I prepare my kids for the session?
Parents always worry about their kids not cooperating—but I promise, it will all be okay!
The key is to set expectations before the session even starts. Talk to them ahead of time and let them know it’s going to be fun and a playful time with the family. If they think of it as an adventure instead of a chore, they’ll be much more relaxed!
Make sure their tummies are full and bring some extra snacks and water-just in case. Those little stomachs get hungry very fast!
Similarly, if you have younger children who are still on a nap schedule, ensure that your session is scheduled around nap time. A well-rested kid is usually a much happier kid!
If they need a little extra motivation, planning a small reward for after the session can be a game-changer.
And don’t stress if they want to run, jump, or explore. Some of the best photos happen when we just let them be them!
I remember this time with a family with three young boys. The energy levels were quite something! One of the boys was having a particularly rough morning and was certainly not happy about having to cooperate, sit, and say “cheese”. Here is my little secret when this happens (which works 98% of the time): I offer them to come look at the back of my camera. This works especially well with the very young kiddos. It helps them better understand what we are doing and usually leads to better cooperation. They get excited about seeing their photos and even end up wanting to take more!

When will we get our photos?
After your session, I’ll carefully edit your images to bring out the best colors, lighting, and details. Once your gallery is ready (about 2 weeks after your session), we will meet again for your reveal and ordering appointment either in person or via zoom. I’ll help you choose your favorite photos as well as design custom artwork for your home. Any artwork that you order should be delivered to your doorstep within 4 to 6 weeks.
How much does family photography cost?
Family photography is an investment in your family memories, and pricing varies based on experience, session type, and what is included.
Most professional family photographers charge between $300–$1,500+, depending on the package and client experience that they offer.

As a full-service photographer, I fully guide my clients from their initial discovery call to designing custom artwork for their home after the session. My creative fee includes:
– Your custom portrait session
– Your custom design consultation and ordering appointment, including my expertise to choose location(s), outfits, and overall vision for your session.
Digital images and artwork packages are purchased separately and start at $395. If you’d like full pricing details, contact me HERE.
Family photos aren’t just about smiling at the camera—they’re about capturing love, connection, and the season of life you’re in right now.
Whether your kids are tiny or growing fast, these moments deserve to be documented in a way that feels natural and timeless.
